Glossary
What the terms on DataNigeria mean, in plain words.
C
- Confidence interval
- The range within which the true value is likely to fall, given that the figure comes from a sample. A 95% interval means that if the survey were repeated many times, 95 out of 100 such ranges would contain the true value.
- Consumer price index (CPI)
- The average price of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, compared with a base period. Changes in the CPI are used to measure inflation. See inflation.
G
- Geopolitical zone
- One of the six groupings of Nigerian states used for planning and statistics: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South and South West.
- Gross domestic product (GDP)
- The value of all goods and services produced in a country in a period. GDP growth is the percentage change in that value after removing the effect of price changes. See gdp growth, gdp naira.
I
- Inflation
- How fast prices rise. An inflation rate of 20% means that, on average, what cost ₦100 a year ago now costs ₦120. It is usually measured with a consumer price index. See inflation.
O
- Official exchange rate
- The number of naira needed to buy one US dollar at the rate published by the Central Bank of Nigeria, averaged over the period shown. See exchange rate.
S
- Stunting
- When a child under five is much shorter than the healthy height for their age, measured against the World Health Organization standard. It is a sign of long-term undernutrition. See dhs stunting.
- Survey estimate
- A figure worked out from a sample of households rather than from everyone. It comes with a margin of error, shown on DataNigeria as a confidence interval where the publisher provides one.
