Browsing the site
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not sell or share information about visitors. The site remembers your choice of light or dark mode and language in your own browser.
Cookies and similar storage
Visitors who are not signed in get no cookies from DataNigeria. Your browser stores a few preferences on your device only: light or dark mode, and whether you have dismissed the privacy note and the Kola hint. Signing in to a developer or staff account sets the cookies needed to keep you signed in. Because none of this tracks you, we do not ask for cookie consent.
Counting visits
To learn which pages and figures are useful, we count page views, searches (including how many results they found), downloads and shares. We do this without cookies: each count is tied only to an anonymous fingerprint made from the day, your network address and browser type, which changes every day and cannot be traced back to you. We never store the address itself. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, nothing is counted. Counts are kept for up to 400 days.
Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, such as the address a request came from and the page requested, to keep the service running and secure.
Using the API
To apply daily limits to requests made without a key, we count requests per network address. The address itself is never stored: we keep only a one-way fingerprint that changes every day, and delete these counts after seven days.
Developer accounts
If you create a developer account, we keep your email address and a securely hashed password, so you can sign in and manage your API keys. We keep a fingerprint of each key, never the key itself, and a daily count of requests made with it. You can revoke keys at any time. To delete your account, use the data request form and we will remove it.
Reporting a problem or contacting us
When you report a problem or use the contact form, we keep your message, the page it was about and, if you give them, your name and email. Each message gets a reference you can use to check for our reply. If you tell us a Kola answer was wrong, the question and answer are sent with your message so we can check them. We keep messages for two years, then delete them. If you give an email address, we use it only to reply about that report. Reports are seen only by our data team and are never published; if a report leads to a correction, the public correction describes the change, not who reported it.
Email updates
If you sign up for the newsletter, release reminders or updates to a figure, we keep your email address, what you chose and when you confirmed. We send only what you asked for, and only after you click the confirmation link. Every email has a link to change or stop your updates; unsubscribing removes your choices straight away. Emails are delivered for us by Resend. We do not track whether you open emails or click links.
Asking Kola
Questions you ask Kola are sent to Anthropic, which provides the AI model, to be answered, together with the published figures Kola looks up. For each answer we record only its length in tokens, how long it took and whether it worked, to manage cost and reliability. We do not store your questions or Kola's answers; if we ever switch on a quality review, this page will say so first, and anything kept would be deleted after 30 days. To keep the service fair, we count questions per network address each day using a one-way fingerprint, deleted after 30 days.
Staff accounts
People who review and publish data sign in to the Data Studio. Their actions are recorded in an audit log, so that every published figure can be traced to the person who approved it.
Where data is stored
The database and file storage are run by Supabase in its London (EU West 2) region, and the website is served by Netlify.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can ask to see, correct or delete personal information we hold about you. Use the data request form; we reply within 30 days of you confirming the request by email.
