Accessibility
DataNigeria is for every Nigerian, whatever device, connection, eyesight or ability they have. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, and level AAA for contrast in high-contrast mode.
Display and accessibility options
Open them from the Display button (the person icon) in the dark bar at the top of every page. Your choices are saved on your device only.
- Text size: 90%, 100%, 115% or 130%. Text, figures and charts all scale, and pages reflow to fit.
- Easier spacing: more space between lines, letters and words.
- Read this page aloud, using your device's voice.
- Light or dark theme.
- High contrast (WCAG AAA): text at a contrast of at least 7 to 1, solid borders, underlined links.
- Colour-blind assist: a chart palette that stays distinct for the common forms of colour blindness, with patterns on chart fills.
- Reduce motion: no videos or animations. We also follow your device's own setting.
- Lite mode: no photos or video, for slow or costly data. It switches on by itself on 2G or when data-saver is on.
- TV and big screens: controls at least 76 pixels, larger type and matte colours, for studios and touchscreens. It switches on by itself on screens 2,560 pixels and wider.
Also built in
- Chart cards have a table view and a written summary, and their figures can be downloaded as CSV.
- The whole site works with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a “Skip to content” link.
- Seven languages: English, Nigerian Pidgin, Hausa, Yorùbá, Igbo, French and Arabic (right to left).
- Pages are built and tested for phones from 360 pixels wide, aiming for tap targets of at least 44 pixels.
- A low-data election page for weak networks.
What is not yet good enough
- Reading aloud in Hausa, Yorùbá and Igbo depends on the voices your phone has; many phones have none yet, so the page is read in English.
- Some charts are hard to follow with a screen reader beyond their summary; use the table view for every figure.
- Translated pages are being reviewed by native speakers.
